Mr. Joe

 (Mr. Joe)

"Who are the superstars in the country?"

If anyone asks, we can challenge the international community, we have a few names to say without fear.

Don John Abeywickrama or Joe Abeywickrama of Gammana Patabendi was born on the 22nd of June 1927 in Lellopitiya, Ratnapura.  Educated at Seewali Maha Vidyalaya, Ratnapura

Arriving in Colombo with the intention of joining the cinema.  When Joe went to Sirisena Wimalaweera's new studio, Sirisena Wimalaweera said

"Ilandaria, these are the ones that suit you."  So Joe has to open and close the stage screen.  Keep up the good work.  In this situation, Joe gets an opportunity to present his first role in the movie "Devasundari".  But Devasundari, who later went to India, had to stay in India for many years.  Meanwhile, Joe joins the role of a police officer in the comedy film.  After that film, Joe made a name for himself in the film industry as a comedian.

But Joe, who was trapped in the frame of being a comedian, did not like it at all.  Sesha Palihakkara's 1965 film 'Saravita' takes Joe's acting life in a completely different direction.  Tony Ranasinghe, one of Joe's contemporaries and another great actor, once said that Joe's best character is Saravite Saraiya.  He was followed by Semaneris in Gatawarayo, Abiling in Thunman Junction, Goring Mudalali in the desert, Anta in the Eyes, Bambaru Avith Anthony, Ektamge Wilson, Siribo Aiya in Siribo Aiya, Sildu in Beddegama, Soldadu Unnahe in Sinhala  Released.  Joe also transcended internationalism with the film Moonlight Darkness.

The distinctive feature of Joe's cinema is that he often portrayed the lives of oppressed people.  Life stories of crooks, swindlers, innocents, and oppressed people like Chandio.  Joe said after playing some of the characters that I was the character of a man from our village.  Joe's contemporaries Tony Ranasinghe and Gamini Fonseka took a completely different path when portraying middle class characters including heroes and lovers.  Joe had a great deal of experience about his character and the lives of the people on whom it was based.  Joe is not just an actor.  A man who had a philosophical reading of the world.  A man who had a good knowledge of music and books.  Like a songwriter and a novelist, Joe's genius pervaded every nook and cranny of art.

Joe's metaphor has left us September 22nd #today_year  So another hundred years later someone is still talking about Joe.  Writes.  That’s the tons of weight Joe released for the movie.  Critics, film buffs and other geniuses have a lot to write about and talk about, but the average moviegoer has only a few words to say about Mr. Joe's acting.

 "Except for Joe."
